Since 1998 John Porteous from Auckland, New Zealand has visited Japan more than 60 times buying over 2,000 motor vehicles from all of the major supply agents, motor vehicle companies and auto auctions Japan-wide. During these eleven years John has developed business relationships with many individuals and companies throughout the length and bredth of Japan.
John has seen many changes over that decade plus one; changes that have impacted on the used car sector in a manner previously unimagined. "When I first went to Japan I would buy stock and the companies I was buying from would hold units in storage for as long as I liked really." John commented recently. "They had the sale and were prepared to work to my dispersement plan by placing three or four units on a ship at a time as cargo space became available until the stock I had bought on a particular trip was despatched. It was not unusual for me to buy 20 to 30 units per trip but since I didn't want that many motor cars arriving at once my dispersement plan was an invaluable tool in managing my stock arrivals into New Zealand."
Now, eleven years on, things are very different. The main difference is the fact that holding stock is now very costly. Auction houses, shipping companies and land owners will not allow storage of motor vehicles at no cost to car companies as many did in earlier years; those days are gone never to return.
This has changed the game somewhat
and while many disadvantages have evolved for car buyers in particular because
of the ever increasing costs of vehicle storage in Japan, one big advantage
has materialised in that because some of the older or a little tatty or perhaps
higher kilometer cars are now of no value to the Japanese dealers, in fact they
have become a liability to them, these vehicles have been offered to John Porteous
for nothing provided he gets them out of expensive Japanese storgage facilities
immediately they are offered to him.
"While I reside in New Zealand and buy stock from Japan to supply the New
Zealand market, I also send vehicles to other countries when the opportunity
presents itself" explained John. "I have been presented with a fantastic
opportunity with this free car deal not only for myself but for my valued clients
also. It is true that the majority of free cars available from Japan at the
moment are not suitable for the New Zealand market but some are and they are
able to be bought right here on this website. Those not suitable for New Zealand
are still able to be exported from Japan into other countries which is another
arm to this business" John added. "However, more free units will be
available to the New Zealand market as time moves along allowing more vehicles
to present themselves to the market. This is because as the months roll by the
supply base of vehicles we are able to buy will widen simply because more new
vehicles are introduced to the Japaenese local market bringing vehicle traded
in on these new vehicles into the used vehicle dealerships and auctions in Japan."
